In ancient times, people, in order to show their benevolent attitude, showed open palms to counter people. This meant that they were empty and did not contain weapons or other dangerous objects. Similarly, the tradition of clinking glasses.
If now the touch of glass is light and rather symbolic, then before this process was applied force, and the wine could flow from one glass to another. Thus, the guests cautioned that their drink could be poisoned, because if so, the host of the celebration would suffer. But back to the handshakes, now this gesture has the same meaning as in antiquity, except that it changed from showing open palms to physical touch with the hands.
What non-verbal meaning is a handshake?
There are three main types of handshakes, in which it becomes clear who holds what position in the meeting, who is willing to make concessions, and who is determined. And you can learn about all this just by looking at your palm and the palm of your partner during a handshake. But first things first.
Pay attention to where your palm is pointing. If it is parallel to the floor, and, more simply, to lay on top of your colleague’s palm, then you are the master of the situation. Thus, you show that you want to rule in negotiations and the last word is yours. But it can also serve as a signal to your colleague (if he, of course, knows about such details of non-verbalism) that you are a dangerous player and it is quite reasonable to keep you at a distance.
On the approximate equality of the partners say the palm in a vertical position relative to one alone. Synonyms of such a handshake are equality, mutual respect. Most often this type is encountered, because on the one hand, people show their reciprocity, and on the other, it is possible to hide true power intentions under the guise of innocent mutual equality.
In this case, too, everything is clear. The essence is the same as in the dominant type, only now it is your palm that is directed upwards to the palm of a friend or partner. If there is a winner, then there is a loser, if there is a dominant, then there is a subordinate. Guess what role is assigned to the one who extends his hand palm up? It is clear that this person feels insecure and ready to give up the palm.
What if a person intentionally uses a dominant handshake?
Yes, really big bosses are accustomed to using this particular type and automatically stretch their hands, palm down. What do you do if there is no desire to become a “victim”?
There is one simple trick, but rehearsing it will not interfere with friends in advance, because improvisation may not justify the hopes placed. When you are given a hand, step forward with your left foot while you are giving yours.
Then move the right leg. Your goal is the position to the left of the partner. Consequently, you get the opportunity to align the hand of a colleague and greet him on an equal footing. Usually, people take a step towards hand shaking with their right foot, leaving no room for themselves to “correct” the situation. To understand the whole essence of this method is possible only in practice.
Who should be the first to reach out?
A handshake in business is the only kind of greeting with a physical touch. Most important is the position of a person. The eldest of the powers decides to stretch his hand or not. In case there are persons of the same rank, the eldest is first to give a hand. You can’t say hello across the table or crossing your arms with other people who also produce a handshake. Wait for your turn.
As for women, there are different opinions on whether to shake hands. And in the West such a question is not worth it – everything is simple: colleagues of different genders often stretch each other’s hands. In the post-Soviet space there is a tightness.
It is important to know only one thing: only a woman can give a hand first, if she wishes. The man does not make this gesture first. And what is interesting, the linguistic nuance, the man stretches his hand, and the woman gives.
Above, we looked at the types of handshakes and their non-verbal nature, but now it’s time to look at other types, because this gesture can not be limited to simply stretching the hand.
Handshake with two hands
Very popular among politicians. The person extends the right hand, as usual, and the left hand supports the hand of the interlocutor. Using such a gesture, a businessman wants to emphasize that he can be trusted. But it is not recommended to do something similar when you first met, you may seem insincere and contrived.
A very strong handshake
If your stalls shake hands until the fingers crunch, he is just a rude and aggressive person who is used to taking his own without demand and permission.
Handshake with arm extended
It is customary to squeeze the arm in the elbow, but if your acquaintance stretches a straight, like a pole arm, this means that he is a secretive person who does not want to let at least you into his area of trust. Likewise, a greeting with people from the countryside, who are used to the great distances between two people, happens in this way. This is due to the presence in the area where they live, a large free area for one person and the lack of need is crowded, as in the city at the bus stop at rush hour. Hence the habit of keeping great physical distance.
Handshake with a pat on the shoulder
It is permissible between persons who are well acquainted with each other or in situations with very pronounced emotions (for example, meeting old companions). As in the case of shaking with two hands, a person wants to express his special greeting and desire to have a closer relationship. The opposite effect occurs with strangers – they begin to be suspicious of similar manifestations of familiarity.
